• DIANA International Human Rights Databases:

 

1. The University of Minnesota Human Rights Library

The University of Minnesota Human Rights Library holds a wide-ranging collection of human rights documents and web links. This site is excellent as a general overview of human rights documentation. Most documents are in HTML, some are available in Adobe Acrobat format.

 

2. The Bora Laskin Law Library DIANA site

Web sites and HTML documents dealing with women's human rights.

 

NOTE: The Yale Law School Library houses a collection of litigation documents used in various human rights-related cases in courts in the U. S. Access to this site is restricted.

 

• European Convention on Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms

 

 

• Human Rights Web

Provides basic information about human rights (a short history of the human rights movement, different actors involved, such as the United Nations, current debates, and resources). Note: Some links do not work.

 

• International Centre for Human Rights and Democratic Development (Rights and Democracy)

Rights & Democracy is a non-partisan organization created by Canada's Parliament in 1988. It currently focuses on (1) democratic development, (2) women's human rights, (3) globalization and human rights, and (4) the rights of indigenous peoples.

 

• Third World Network (TWN)

Network of organizations and individuals involved in issues relating to development, the Third World and North- South issues. It offers documents (general information, opinions, press releases) dealing with issues such as trade developments, biotechnology, biodiversity, indigenous rights, women’s rights, security, tourism, health, etc.

 

• World Policy Institute: Project for Global Democracy and Human Rights

Themes: political rights, economic rights, death penalty, electoral systems, environment, sexual orientation, and religion. It provides information and press releases on each of these themes. The information is organized by theme and world region.

 

• Derechos Human Rights

Internet based human rights organization that works for the promotion of human rights in Latin America and the world, as well as opportunities to help. They coordinate human rights mailing lists and publish an Internet human rights journal.

 

• One World Net

Data on human rights and sustainable development coverage. Contains a limited number of country guides on civil rights, disability, indigenous rights, gender, race politics, religion, etc.

 

• Practical Ethics

A lively and informative essay on ethics.

 

• Teaching Human Rights Online

Contains cases, critical thinking exercises, and problem-solving for teaching HR.

II. Economic and Social Rights

Trade - Human Rights - Equitable Economy.  Promotes collaboration amongst trade, development and human rights professionals, to ensure that trade rules are developed and applied in ways that promote an equitable economy.

 

• Centre on Housing Rights and Evictions  *NEW LINK*

 

Promotes and protects the right to housing for everyone, everywhere.  Supports local and national capacity-building in the area of economic, social and cultural rights and places particular emphasis on securing respect for the housing rights of traditionally disadvantaged groups, including women, children, ethic or other minorities and indigenous peoples.

 

• Business and Human Rights Resource Center

Online library that provides access links to a wide range of materials on subjects relating to business and human rights. Subjects include but are not limited to: gender discrimination, pollution, development and indigenous and environmental rights.

 

• Center for Economic and Social Rights (CESR)

CESR focuses on the social and economic aspects of human rights, in particular freedom of expression (civil and political rights) and freedom from want (economic and social rights). CESR has held projects in the Middle East, Latin America, and the United States. Links to newsletters, press reports, and upcoming events.

 

• The Centre for Equality Rights in Accommodation

Great source of information on human rights in housing. They address issues of discrimination in housing, homelessness, and poverty.

III. Labor Issues

 

• Democracy, Human Rights, and Labor

The U.S. Department of State web page on democracy, human rights, labor, and religious freedom. Links to press releases, fact sheets, and special reports.

 

• Fair Labor Association

An independent monitoring system that holds participating companies accountable for the conditions under which their products are produced. The FLA enforces an industry-wide Workplace Code of Conduct, which is based on the labor standards of the International Labour Organization (ILO). Source of information to consumers and promotes public awareness about labor conditions around the world. Up-to-date press releases.

 

• The International Labor Rights Fund

An advocacy organization dedicated to achieving just and humane treatment for workers worldwide. It focuses on issues such as safe working environment, child labor, forced labor, and abusive labor practices. Links to their current projects (worldwide), press releases, publications.

 

• International Labor Organization

Has a useful search engine, library, and publication information source.

 

• UW-Madison and Sweatshops

Information on manufacturing locations, study of living wages, and protecting the rights of workers, especially women. Press releases, updated information on labor issues. Also see the Worker’s Rights Consortium, which overlooks the enforcement of manufacturing codes of conduct adopted by colleges and universities. Ensures that factories producing clothing and other goods bearing college and university names respect the basic rights of workers. Reports on violations are made to universities, colleges, U.S.-based retail corporations and the general public to improve conditions.

IV. Environment and Human Rights

 

• Amazon Watch

Provide media support and training to indigenous populations in the Amazon region to articulate their concerns over large-scale development; document and disseminate information on social and environmental effects of large-scale development projects in the Amazon region; inform investors; and provide legal support to indigenous peoples.

 

• International Rivers Network

Provides support to local communities to protect rivers and watersheds from large-scale river development projects and encourage sustainable methods of meeting water needs. Includes a list of publications, campaigns, and current projects around the world.

 

• Rainforest Action Network

Its purpose is to protect tropical rainforests and the human rights of the people that live in or around those forests. Includes links to their projects, campaigns, and reports.

 

• The Jatun Sacha Foundation

One of the largest non-profit organizations in Ecuador. Their purpose is to protect the Ecuadorian forest habitats by conducting scientific research, providing community training in agroforestry, environmental education, and public health. Information on internships using GIS software for national park planning.

The Indigenous Peoples Biodiversity Information Network (IBIN) is a mechanism to exchange information about experiences and projects and to increase collaboration among indigenous groups working on common causes related to biodiversity use and conservation.

Provides information and resources on the promotion of gender equality through the UN system.

• International Women’s Health Coalition
